A million and a half hectares of spring barley planted in Ukraine

As of April 22nd, 2019, barley sowing in Ukraine has progressed to 1.48 million hectares, representing 95 per cent of the forecast areas. Early spring grain and leguminous crops are sown on an area of 2.1 million hectares, accounting for 93 per cent of the areas.

The Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine reports the following indicators of spring planting campaign in Ukraine:

  • spring barley — 1.48 million hectares (95 pct);
  • wheat — 154 thousand hectares (92 pct);
  • oats — 179 thousand hectares (92 pct);
  • peas — 285 thousand hectares (84 pct);
  • corn — 545 thousand hectares (12 pct);
  • soybean — 76 thousand hectares (4 pct);
  • sunflower — 1.4 million hectares (25 pct).

The forecast area of crops in 2019 is 27.7 million hectares, remaining at the previous year's level.

Sowing of grain crops is to be carried out on the area of 14.8 million hectares, making up 54 per cent in the structure of sown areas. Sowing of spring crops will cover 7.2 million hectares, industrial crops — 9.2 million hectares, potatoes and vegetables — 1.8 million hectares, and fodder crops — 1.9 million hectares.

In July-March 2018/19, 37.2 million tons of grain crops were exported from Ukraine, 18 per cent higher from the previous season. This volume corresponds to 81 per cent of the grain market export potential in 2018/19 which is estimated by analysts at 46.2 million tons.
