Ukraine's wheat export potential over 70% reached

Ukraine exported 15.9 mln t of wheat worth USD 4 bln to foreign markets in the first half of the 2021/22(July-June) season, the State Customs Service data shows, the APK-Inform consultancy reports. The volume of wheat exported is 27% up YoY (1H 2020/21: 12.5 mln t) and 62% higher in monetary terms (USD 2.5 bln).

Analysts expect Ukrainian wheat exports to reach 22.5 mln t in 2021/22 and, consequently, the export potential in the first half of the season is 71% fulfilled.

The largest importers of Ukrainian wheat in July-Dec 2021/22:

  • Indonesia: 2.7 mln t, 21% up YoY
  • Egypt: 2.4 mln t, 57% up YoY
  • Turkey: 1.5 mln t, 3x higher YoY and 93% above the season 2020/21 total volume of imports

The USDA in its January report left unaltered its projections for wheat production and export from Ukraine in 2021/22.

As of Jan. 10, wheat export from Ukraine made up 16.1 mln t, 27% up YoY.

As a reminder, wheat export from Ukraine in 2021/22 was limited to 25.3 mln t. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the Agrarian Ministry and grain market participants. The Government also considers milling wheat export from the country. The decision is reported to be taken in January.
