Ukraine completes highest in three seasons peas crop, expects areas increase

In the 2024 season, Ukraine harvested the highest pea crop in three years, largely due to an increase in planted areas, UkrAgroConsult reports.

This year, peas were harvested on an area of 212 thou. hectares, up 40% on 2023. The crop harvested totalled 465.3 thou. tons with an average yield of 2.19 t/ha, down from the long-term average and last season's yield of 2.46 t/ha. The key peas production regions include:

  • Odesa: 147 thou. tons, 2.45 t/ha
  • Mykolaiv: 76 thou. tons, 2.45 t/ha
  • Kirovohrad: 37 thou. tons, 2.01 t/ha
  • Kharkiv: 29 thou. tons, 1.48 t/ha

"Peas prices are high this season. This year's cancellation of 50% duty on peas by India, which was originally due to expire in spring but was extended three times until the end of the calendar year, is one of the reasons for this. Despite the poor pea yields this year, high prices and the opening of new processing facilities in Ukraine will encourage farmers to increase their pea areas in 2025," the analysts explained.
