Ukraine’s grain storage industry losses from war estimated at $1 billion — KSE
Ukraine’s grain storage industry has suffered approximately $1.1 billion in losses as a result of the full-scale Russia-Ukraine war, according to Pavlo Martyshev, analyst at the Food and Land Use Research Center of the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE Agrocenter), delo.ua reports.
According to him, over four years of war, Ukraine has lost between 9 and 13 million tons of grain storage capacity. Some of the destroyed or damaged facilities have already been restored; however, the total volume of elevator capacity remains lower than before the start of the full-scale invasion.
Currently, the country’s total grain storage capacity stands at around 53 million tons, which is approximately 4 million tons less than in 2021.
“Losses of the elevator industry due to the war are estimated at roughly $1.1 billion,” Martyshev stated.
At the same time, despite significant infrastructure losses, there is currently no shortage of grain storage capacity in Ukraine. This is explained by a decline in grain and oilseed harvests — from 106 million tons in 2021 to about 76 million tons in 2025.
