Grain exports from Ukraine in 1H 2018 down 11%

In January-June 2018, grain exports from Ukraine stood at 18.6 million tons for the amount of USD 3.2 billion, which is 11.4% y-o-y. This is reported by Nikolai Pugachev, the deputy director of the National Scientific Center Institute of Agrarian Economics, NAAS corresponding member.

The key importers of the Ukrainian grain in 2018 are as follows:

  • Egypt — 14.8% of the total imports;
  • China — 10.4%;
  • Spain — 8.8%;
  • the Netherlands — 7.1%;
  • Iran — 7.0%;
  • Italy — 6.5%;
  • Tunisia — 5.1%.

According to Nikolai Pugachev, together with Israel, Turkey and Morocco, these countries bring more than 70% of revenues from all exports of this group of products.

"According to the preliminary results, in MY2017/18 Ukraine exported 39.4 million tons of grain. Corn supplies amounted to 17.7 million tons, wheat — 17.1 million tons, barley — 4.3 million tons," the expert noted.

According to him, this result is almost 10% below the level of MY2016/2017, when 43.9 million tons of Ukrainian grain were delivered to the world market.

Reference: the FAO Cereal Price Index averaged 160.9 points in July, down nearly 6 points (3.6%) from June and also 1.3 points (0.8%) below its level in the corresponding period last year.
