Winter barley yields 6.8% higher in Poltava region

Harvesting began in most districts of Poltava region: winter barley cropping is in progress, the regional authority reports.

As of July 3, 2.5 thou. t of winter barley was threshed in the region, the average yield is 4.7 t/ha, 6.8% higher from last year's 4.4 t/ha.

According to the report, 340 thou. ha of early grains were sown in the region in the current production season. In 2020, agricultural producers expect to harvest 950 thou. t of wheat.

"At present, winter wheat is yielding 4-4.5 t/ha. In some districts, it will yield higher. Although spring frosts did not affect winter wheat, they intricated their development. And this year the crop will lower from last year," said Sergei Frolov, head of the Agricultural Department at the Regional State Administration of Poltava region.

According to him, the active harvesting campaign will start in mid-July. A total of 1,802 combine harvesters have been prepared for field works.

As of July 2, agriproducers in Ukraine harvested 1.13 mln t of early grains and legumes on 419.4 thou. ha of the planned 15.15 mln ha.
