Growers in Ukraine plant first million hectares of spring crops

As of April 21, growers in Ukraine have sown 1.25 million hectares of grains and pulses, which accounts for 21% of the planned area, according to the Ministry of Economy.

The largest areas so far are under barley — 623.8 thousand hectares (83%), peas — 238.3 thousand hectares (87%), and wheat — 158.8 thousand hectares (85%). In addition, 117.5 thousand hectares of oats (85%) and 75.7 thousand hectares of corn (2%) have been sown. Buckwheat sowing has begun in Kharkiv region.

The fastest sowing pace is observed in the southern and central regions. In particular, the leaders include Odesa (168.2 thousand hectares), Ternopil (96.3 thousand hectares), Mykolaiv (89.4 thousand hectares), and Poltava (86.5 thousand hectares) regions.

Sowing of industrial crops is ongoing in parallel. In total, 440.8 thousand hectares have been planted. Sugar beet sowing is progressing most actively — 125.4 thousand hectares (64% of the forecast). Sunflower has been sown on 293.6 thousand hectares (6%), and soybeans on 21.8 thousand hectares (1%).
