Pork imports in June-Aug increased 8-fold
In June-August 2018, import of fresh, chilled and frozen pork amounted to 10.5 thou. tons, which is 8 times more than over the corresponding period of the previous year.
The Association of Pig Breeders of Ukraine (APU) informs that in January-August 2018 imports amounted to 15.7 thou. tons (7.5 times more than in 2017). These volumes cost enterprises-importers almost USD 30 million.
"Now, a revival of pork imports and modest exports are observed. The impetus for this was the weaker supply of pork in the country than last year and the proximity of domestic prices to European ones. Nevertheless, according to estimates of Ukrainian and international analysts, domestic production meets the needs of the domestic market by more than 90%. This means that consumers will purchase mainly domestic pork," the APU specialists commented.
Reference: exports of frozen and chilled beef in January-July 2018 amounted to 20.79 thou. tons.
