Winter crops planting in Ukraine nears 60%

As of October 10, farms in Ukraine planted around 3.7 mln hectares of winter crops for the 2024 harvest, the Ministry of Agriculture reports. This represents 58% of the projected area.

Soil drought in the majority of regions prevents growers from completing the campaign. There has been no rain for 40-55 days in many regions. The development conditions for the planted crops are increasingly unfavourable.

Sown areas by crops:

  • winter rapeseed 1.11 mln ha, 92%
  • winter wheat 2.35 mln ha, 54%
  • winter barley 171 thou. ha, 25%
  • winter rye 60 thou. ha, 74%

In the week of October 2-8, producers planted 680 thou. hectares of winter crops, including 24 thou. hectares of winter rapeseed.

For the 2023 harvest winter crops area in Ukraine totalled 5.7 mln ha. For 2024 it is projected at 6.34 mln ha.
