Ukraine harvests first million tonnes of corn, with yield exceeding 11 t/ha in one region

Growers in Ukraine harvested 1.62 million tons of corn as of October 5, with the country’s average yield increasing, according to Agriculture Ministry data.

Corn production more than doubled over the week, rising by 834,000 tons. The harvested area also nearly doubled, from 153,300 hectares as of September 28 to 294,200 hectares as of October 5.

The average corn yield increased from 5.15 t/ha to 5.52 t/ha.

Overall, farms in Ukraine plan to harvest corn from 4.56 million hectares this year. So far, the crop has been harvested from 6.5% of the projected area.

As of October 5, the largest corn harvest was recorded in Poltava region, where farmers harvested 435,100 tons from 77,000 hectares at an average yield of 5.65 t/ha.

In Sumy region, growers harvested 312,900 tons of corn from 37,900 hectares, with a yield of 8.26 t/ha. In Kyiv region, 178,500 tons were harvested from 35,000 hectares at a yield of 5.1 t/ha.

The top five regions by corn output also included Chernihiv region, with 135,000 tons at a yield of 9 t/ha, and Dnipropetrovsk region, with 126,600 tons at a yield of 2.58 t/ha.

The highest corn yield among regions where harvesting has already started is currently recorded in Ivano-Frankivsk region at 11.44 t/ha. It is followed by Chernihiv region at 9 t/ha, Sumy region at 8.26 t/ha and Ternopil region at 8.02 t/ha.
