Ukraine nearly completes half of winter grain sowing, with Mykolaiv region leading
As of October 6, growers in Ukraine planted 2.52 million hectares of winter grains, or 48.4% of the projected area, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy. The sowing campaign is therefore approaching the halfway mark.
Ukraine plans to sow winter grains on a total of 5.21 million hectares this year. Over the past week, the area sown increased by 925,700 hectares, compared with 1.59 million hectares as of September 29.
Wheat accounts for the largest share of the area, with 2.25 million hectares sown out of the planned 4.54 million hectares, or 49.6%.
Winter barley has been sown on 209,900 hectares, representing 35.4% of the projected 593,800 hectares. Rye sowing has reached 57,800 hectares, or 75.3% of the planned 76,700 hectares.
As of October 6, the largest areas of winter grains were sown in the following regions:
- Mykolaiv region — 368,800 hectares;
- Dnipropetrovsk region — 284,600 hectares;
- Poltava region — 200,100 hectares;
- Ternopil region — 162,800 hectares;
- Kirovohrad region — 160,300 hectares;
- Kyiv region — 158,700 hectares.
In terms of the share of planned acreage completed, Volyn region is in the lead, with winter grains sown on 89% of the projected area. Ternopil region has completed 84.6% of its planned sowing, while Kyiv region has reached 83.8%.
Growers have also planted 1.04 million hectares of winter rapeseed, completing 94.2% of the projected area.
