Sowing campaign in Ukraine started a month earlier

In the current year, the sowing campaign began a month earlier due to favourable weather conditions compared to 2018, making it possible to achieve high results.

“With the appropriate weather conditions, we were able to start the agricultural season from the first days of March this year. Early field works, early resumption of vegetation provide good prospects for this agrarian year,” Volodymyr Topchiy, Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, said.

Advantages of early spring fieldworks were confirmed by Tatyana Adamenko, Head of the Department of Agrometeorology of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, who noted that fieldwork during the meteorological spring is beneficial for the future harvest. According to her forecasts, the weather in March will be favourable, precipitation will alternate with sunny periods.

The report also states that winter crops fertilization continues in Ukraine. It is already carried out on about 4 million hectares, 53-54% of all areas.

“The winter crops area of 7.6 million hectares is one of the largest in recent years, of which 6.5 million hectares is under winter wheat. Owing to supportive weather conditions, the crops wintered well, there is no information on any losses,” the deputy minister said.

As previously reported, the agricultural enterprises were 26% supplied with mineral fertilizers for spring-summer field works as at January 25th, 2019.
