G7 drafting scheme to combat trade in stolen Ukrainian grain

The Group of Seven (G7) countries are designing a scheme to combat the theft of Ukrainian grain from the occupied territories. The origin of the grain is to be verified by chemical identification, Reuters reports.

The initiative was announced by Britain's Food and farming minister Mark Spencer said on Monday, June 12.

At the International Grains Council conference in London, Mark Spencer said that the UK is playing a leading role in the Ukrainian grain traceability scheme and that the G7 countries are also working closely with Ukraine on this issue.

"We believe (chemical identification) will be an effective means for deterring further theft of Ukraine's grain," said Spencer.

The Ukrainian Grain Association (UGA) assumes that russia has already stolen around 4 million tons of grain in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022.
