FAO and Qatar to allocate USD 10 million for demining three frontline regions in Ukraine
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) have signed a $10 million agreement to support rural communities in Ukraine affected by landmine and explosive ordnance contamination.
The new partnership will cover more than 3,500 rural households and 100 small farmers across three frontline regions in southern and eastern Ukraine.
The program will assess community needs based on geospatial analysis, soil condition evaluation, land rehabilitation, and restoration of agricultural production. It will also conduct non-technical and technical surveys and land-clearing operations. In addition, the initiative will help develop a scalable model that can be applied in other crisis contexts.
Ukraine remains one of the most heavily mined countries in the world: the area of potentially contaminated land reaches up to 138,500 square kilometers, which is comparable to the size of Greece.
