Ukraine's bioethanol production capacity expands 2.5x in one year
Ukraine's bioethanol production capacity has increased by more than 2.5 times (160%) over the past year, creating the conditions to raise annual bioethanol output to 1 million tons, according to the Ministry of Economy.
Deputy Minister of Economy Taras Vysotskyi said that harmonising Ukraine's regulatory framework with European rules is essential for the industry's development, opening new export markets, and integrating the country into the EU single market.
Currently, 10 of Ukraine's 17 licensed bioethanol producers are in operation. Annual production now stands at 180,000–200,000 tons, while existing production capacity is already sufficient to double that volume.
The Ministry of Economy noted that updating the regulatory framework is expected to create the conditions needed to increase bioethanol production to 1 million tons per year. The expansion could generate an estimated $1.5 billion in economic benefits for the country.
The ministry also emphasised that the development of the bioethanol sector will stimulate demand for Ukrainian agricultural feedstocks. A bioethanol plant with an annual capacity of 100,000 tons processes up to 350,000 tons of corn or other biomass each year.
Building such a facility requires $50–100 million in investment, while the sector's total investment potential already exceeds $300 million. Each plant creates up to 150 direct jobs and supports up to 1,000 additional jobs in related industries.
