Sugar output by Ukrainian refineries to drop 30 pct

In 2018/19, sugar production decrease in Ukraine is estimated at 23-29 per cent falling to 1.3-1.4 million tons — a record low since the year 2013.

"The global surplus affected sugar production in Ukraine. Excess sugar influenced the decline in prices, levelling the financial reserves of producers both in the world and in Ukraine. At the moment, it is rather difficult to predict the yield and sugar content of beets, sowing of which is almost completed. However, we can assume that there will be 23-29 per cent less sugar in autumn — 1.3-1.4 million tons — representing the lowest production volume since 2013," Ruslana Butylo, the Deputy Chairman of the Board of the National Association of Sugar Producers of Ukraine (Ukrsugar) noted.

Considering the decrease in sugar beet sowing areas and the number of functioning refineries in Ukraine, caused by the global sugar surplus, a significant reduction in sugar production and price increase are forecasted.
