Continental cuts corn area in production season 2023
Continental Farmers Group (CFG) plans to reduce corn plantings from 15% to 10% in the production season 2023. Grain elevators are the primary reason for this. If there are issues with the grain corridor, there may appear a shortage of storage capacity, AgroTimes reports.
"We will hold off until late February or early March and make a final decision on the corn area, depending on the situation. Last year, we already changed the cropping plan, we planted more sugar beet and buckwheat, taking into account food security issues to ensure domestic consumption," stated Vitaliy Stavniychuk, CFG's operational director.
This year, the company also plans to grow these crops. CFG is not giving up on potatoes either, as the agricultural holding is one of the largest producers of this strategic vegetable for Ukraine.
"The situation with the structure of the planting areas in the country is unclear. Some producers have not sown winter crops, including wheat, and there is still a lot of corn in the fields. Therefore, there may be demand for corn next season, and producers will plant more of it. There is logic in this. But we are thinking about storage issues in case it is impossible to sell it, given the political situation. Therefore, we need to have spare time to make a decision," added the top manager.
In June 2021, Continental announced the commissioning of a new grain elevator in Western Ukraine.
