Over 100 thou. t of grain lost on right bank of Kherson region

The damage to the left bank of Kherson region after the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant is yet to be assessed, but it is known that several hundred thousand tonnes of grain were stored there. On the right bank, more than 100,000 tonnes of crops were lost, says the first deputy minister of agrarian policy and food of Ukraine Taras Vysotskyi.

In total, Ukraine may lose several million tonnes of crops as a result of the destruction of the Kakhovka HPP. The flooded land will require a full agro-ecological assessment of the soil condition, but after the water recedes. In most cases, special soil restoration methods will need to be applied.

"Two main groups of products were grown on the land affected by the destruction of the Kakhovka HPP, one of them being vegetables and melons. The second group is grains and oilseeds: soybean, corn, sunflower, and wheat. Without a source of water supply, it is impossible to grow vegetables. Grains and oilseeds will be grown on an extensive model with low yields," he adds.

The impossibility of growing several million tonnes of grains and oilseeds without irrigation is the biggest threat to international food security, he noted.

At around 2:30 a.m. on June 6, the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant was blown up by russian occupants.
