EU-gauge railway between Chop and Uzhhorod set to launch in July
The EU-gauge railway line between Chop and Uzhhorod is expected to launch in July, Deputy Finance Minister Oleksandr Kava said in an interview with Ukrinform.
Preparations are also underway for the construction of EU-gauge lines in Lviv and Chernivtsi, with Lutsk likely to follow next, Kava added.
According to him, converting the entire Ukrainian railway network to the European track gauge after the war would be impractical due to high costs and limited economic benefits. The broad-gauge tracks currently used in Ukraine allow for much heavier cargo loads — up to 5,000–6,000 tons — compared to the EU standard of around 2,000 tons.
He noted that for container shipments, transshipment between platforms is not a complicated process, and the number of terminals on Ukraine's borders with the EU continues to grow.
