Russia destroys Risoil sunflower oil tank at Chornomorsk port
On April 26, as a result of Russia's attack on Chornomorsk, port infrastructure was damaged — a sunflower oil storage tank was destroyed during a fire, the State Environmental Inspectorate of the South-Western District reported.
According to environmental officials, the tank contained 6 thousand tons of sunflower oil. However, in a comment to Latifundist.com, RISOIL co-owner Shota Khadzhishvili confirmed that the tank belonged to the company but denied that it held 6 thousand tons.
“At most about one thousand tons spilled; everything is contained with booms, and the State Emergency Service is collecting it,” he said.
According to the inspectorate, services of the Chornomorsk branch of the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority installed barriers to prevent the oil from spreading and blocked the stormwater drainage system to stop residues from entering the water.
Inspectors who arrived at the scene did not record soil contamination, as the area is covered with concrete. However, part of the oil entered the port’s water area. A slick measuring approximately 400 by 200 meters formed on the water and was contained with special barriers.
Specialists also collected water samples for analysis. The results will determine the extent of pollution and help assess damages. A final evaluation of harm to the marine environment will be provided after all results are obtained.
