Around 130 000 sq km of Ukraine territory require mine-clearance: MoD
Preliminary data suggest that 130 thousand square kilometres of Ukraine's territory are to be demined. However, this figure will change since not all territories have been de-occupied yet, stated Deputy Minister of Defense Vyacheslav Shapovalov in an interview with UNN.
The accurate figures will be available later as many territories are under occupation or in the war zone, he explained.
"We cannot determine precisely, because we have no access there. We understand that we will have to do it, we will have to do it for more than a decade, for the contamination with explosives is rather heavy," said the deputy minister.
Vyacheslav Shapovalov added that active demining works are underway in the liberated territories of Ukraine. He specified that first of all these are territories used by citizens, although the work with agricultural enterprises farmland has already started: inspection and mapping of contaminated territories.
Ukraine's foreign partners are providing assistance in this process. It includes the provision of equipment, protective gear for sappers, and training.
