European Commission views ban on import of Ukrainian grain to Romania

The European Commission is about to ban imports of Ukrainian grains and oilseeds to Romania until June 5, Reuters reports.

Romania has not introduced a ban, while Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria and Slovakia have unilaterally taken measures to protect their local markets from the inflow of Ukrainian agricultural products.

Romanian Agriculture Minister Petre Daea stated that the EC's measures are preceded by states cancelling their unilateral bans. If no agreement is reached, the Commission will ban imports of Ukrainian grain to Romania.

"Negotiations with the states are still ongoing. Romania will be protected by the decision of the European Commission and ... will receive compensation for farmers," he added.

Earlier, Petre Daea announced that Romania has no plans to ban imports of Ukrainian food and will wait for the European Commission to introduce measures to help farmers in Central and Eastern Europe.
