European Commission's ban on imports of Ukrainian grains comes into force on May 2

The European Commission's move to ban imports of wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower from Ukraine will take effect in May, RMF24 reports with reference to its sources in Brussels.

Poland is to drop its ban on imports of numerous commodities from Ukraine by May 2. The European Commission is drafting an EU regulation banning imports of wheat, corn, rapeseed, and sunflowerseed to five EU countries: Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria.

The embargo is due to enter into force on May 2.

Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovakia have announced the lifting of unilateral restrictions in the near future. The European Commission is expecting clear decisions on this issue to avoid parallel bans.

For context, on April 28, the European Commission reached an agreement with 5 countries to ban Ukrainian imports.

Eastern European countries sent a letter to the European Commission proposing to expand the list of agricultural products banned for import from Ukraine.
