TERRA to launch Ukraine’s first pea protein production facility

Cereal producer TERRA announced plans to launch Ukraine’s first production facility for pea protein and starch, company co-owner and commercial director Oleksandr Yasynskyi said during the New Food Summit, Elevatorist.com reports.

“I’ve been working on this project for several years. Over the past year, I visited many countries, studied technologies, selected equipment — and yesterday signed a contract with a leading company for the supply of equipment for protein and starch production, as well as for processing peas into protein,” Yasynskyi said.

TERRA’s cereal plant has the capacity to process around 25,000 tons of peas per year.

According to Yasynskyi, the company’s strategy is to combine traditional cereal production with the development of innovative, trend-driven products. Despite challenges with energy supply, workforce, and logistics, TERRA plans to actively develop pea processing as a promising niche. Most of the output is intended for export, as the company already has a solid base of international clients interested in such products.

“We will combine our oat flakes and gluten-free product capacities with the production of dry-processed pea protein — without any chemical ingredients. Both the protein and the starch will be certified as organic,” he added.

Yasynskyi also emphasised that Ukraine currently lacks industrial-scale production of pea protein and starch — the market is dominated by soy-based products and corn starch, most of which are imported.
