Sunflower production in Ukraine cut 2 mln t short by USDA

Sunflowerseeds harvest in Ukraine in 2020/21(September-August) is projected by USDA at 15 mln t, 2 mln t lower from the previous estimate.

Sunflower meal production in Ukraine, according to USDA forecasts, was consequently reduced to 6.133 mln t, 1.09 mln t lower from the previous estimate in September (7.22 mln t), sunflower oil production forecast was cut by 0.55 mln t to 6.39 mln t (September forecast: 6.94 mln t).

The projection of sunflowerseeds harvest in the key producing countries:

  • Ukraine: 15 mln t (reduced by 2 mln t)
  • Russia: 13.5 mln t
  • EU: 9.5 mln t (reduced by 0.25 mln t)
  • Argentina: 3 mln t (reduced by 0.4 mln t)
  • Turkey: 1.66 mln t

The October USDA report indicates that the world production of sunflowerseeds is expected at 51.49 mln t, compared to 55.02 mln t in 2019/20, sunflower meal at 21.51 mln t, compared to 22.73 mln t. At that, the global sunflower oil production is expected at 20.05 mln t, 1.22 mln t lower from 2019/20.

The Business Development Manager of Maxigrain Elena Neroba previously noted that in view of unfavourable weather conditions, in particular, drought, lack of soil moisture in both the upper and the meter layer of soil, sunflowerseeds production in the country may decline to 13 mln t.
