Barley yields 13% higher in 2021 crop year

At the moment, the crop condition in Ukraine is good and early cereal yields should be high, with barley most likely to make a record yield, UkrAgroConsult writes.

Among the staple crops, only the corn area was down on the previous season, by 2% (5.35 mln ha). Analysts add that last year the corn area sown was a record in Ukraine's history (5.38 mln ha).

"Harvesting campaign commenced later than usual, but the average barley yield is already reaching 3.93 t/ha, almost 13% higher than on the same date in 2020. About 1% of the wheat area has been cut, so the average yields are not yet representative, but the high barley yields confirm that the weather conditions for the future grain harvest in Ukraine are favourable," explain the experts.

UkrAgroConsult analysts revised upward their estimates of wheat and barley crop through increased yields.

"The only issue with the June weather was excessive rainfall (heavy showers and thunderstorms in places) in the southern regions, which resulted in lodging of crops and poor grain quality," the report reads.

Since the start of 2021/22, barley export from Ukraine has made up 95 thou. t, 49% down YoY.
