Wheat Exporters from Ukraine in 1H 2020
Having set another wheat production record (28.2 mln t), in the 2019/2020 season(July 2019-June 2020) Ukraine also scaled up export supplies of this crop. According to the Economy Ministry, the country sold 20.4 mln t of wheat abroad, 31% more from 2018/2019.
In the first half of the calendar year 2020 (the second half of 2019/2020), suppliers exported a quarter of the total: 5.4 mln t of wheat. The 15 largest exporting companies account for more than 80% of the major bread cereal shipment. Moreover, the composition of the main suppliers remains more or less stable. NIBULON, Cargill and Louis Dreyfus Company hold the top three positions.
As tradition goes, at the beginning of the new marketing year (MY), the Economy Ministry and the grain market participants signed a Memorandum regulating grain export volumes from Ukraine in 2020/2021. The Ministry proposed to limit the export of wheat to 17.2 mln t to ensure the country's food security. In the past MY, the limit was set at 20.2 mln t. Experts projected reduction of wheat harvest in the current marketing year to 23-24 mln t as a result of lower winter wheat harvest. Thus, in the new marketing year, sales of this crop to foreign markets will be curbed.
