Farmers in Ukraine claim irrigation system monopolization threat by large companies

Farmers of Mykolaiv and Kherson regions allege the threat of monopolization of the irrigation system by large agricultural companies. They are convinced that this will only increase the cost of irrigation in Ukraine, AgroPolit.com reports.

This course of events is possible after the adoption by Ukraine's Parliament of draft law No. 5202-d "On water users' organizations and stimulation of hydraulic land reclamation".

31 farmers, agricultural company owners signed the relevant appeal, which the MP, member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Agrarian and Land Policy Vadym Ivchenko shared with AgroPolit.com.

The Accounting Chamber estimated the potential to increase Ukraine's GDP at 0.2%, or UAH 8.8 bln, if the total irrigated area was provided with operational sprinkling machines.

The EBRD considered the provision of a loan for the reconstruction of the irrigation system in southern Ukraine.
