Winter crops cover 5.5% more area in Ukraine for harvest 2022

For the country's 2022 crop, winter grain and oilseed crops were planted on 7.7 mln ha, 0.4 mln ha of 5.5% more YoY, the Agrarian Ministry reports.

Winter crops area to be harvested in 2022:

  • winter wheat and triticale: 6.5 mln ha, 0.4 mln ha YoY
  • winter rapeseed: 1.02 mln ha, 143 thou. ha
  • winter barley: 1 mln ha, 45 thou. ha
  • winter rye: 159 thou. ha, 34 thou. ha

As per the NAAS data, winter cereal crops are in a tillering phase, over-wintering well. The crops condition is assessed as satisfactory.

Seed certification authorities report that agricultural enterprises have prepared and certified over 41,000 t of seeds for the 2022 harvest, which is about 10% of the total demand on the level of the previous year, including 21,000 t of corn, 5,000 t of sunflower, 3,200 t of soybean and 250 t of buckwheat.

According to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre, the level of precipitation in January in the northern and western regions reached 130-180%, 40-60% in the southern regions and close to the monthly norm in the central regions.

In November, the Ministry reported 7.33 mln ha of winter crops sown.

In its February report, the USDA projects wheat production 2021/22 in Ukraine at 33 mln t.
