Business ready to invest $5 billion in biomethane if the government helps establish exports — MHP

Ukrainian businesses are ready to invest $5 billion in biomethane production over the next three to five years if the government helps establish export channels to EU countries, said MHP Deputy CEO for Bioenergy Adomas Audickas during a panel discussion at the Kyiv International Economic Forum, Delo.ua reports.

“Despite the global economic slowdown, if markets open up in three to five years, $5 billion of investment in this sector would not be a problem at all. We can make this business profitable, but we need exports — and that’s where government support is crucial,” Audickas noted.

He added that Ukraine has the potential to produce up to 400 billion GWh of biomethane (around 38.2 billion m³). The main obstacle for businesses remains the limited sales market due to complex regulatory frameworks in the EU and its member states.

According to Audickas, to expand export opportunities, Ukrainian businesses need government assistance in navigating regulatory issues and entering international markets.

On February 7, 2025, VITAGRO became the first Ukrainian company to export biomethane produced entirely from livestock waste to Germany as a test shipment of 720 MWh (~68,000 m³).

On February 11, an MHP subsidiary made its first biomethane export to Europe — a shipment of 27.4 thousand m³.

On June 24, Horodyshche-Pustovarivska Agricultural Company, part of Hals Agro, exported its first batch of self-produced biomethane.
