Ukraine in talks with Germany to expand biomethane exports — Sobolev

Ukraine is working to increase its biomethane exports to the European Union and is holding separate negotiations with Germany to expand supplies of this type of fuel, said Oleksii Sobolev, Minister of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture of Ukraine, in an interview with Forbes Ukraine.

According to him, the interest in biomethane is mutual, as Ukraine needs investment in processing and renewable energy development, while Germany is seeking additional energy sources that are currently in short supply.

Sobolev noted that several issues remain, including financing for equipment purchases and regulatory restrictions on potential importers. For example, Germany currently limits the import of biomethane from non-EU countries.

“We have officially appealed, and now a draft law is being considered in the Bundestag that would allow biomethane from Energy Community member countries to be sold under the same conditions as EU-produced gas. This will make biomethane production economically viable,” he said.

Regarding bioethanol, Ukraine continues to explore new markets. In the biogas sector, the country is offering Germany grants or equipment for building on-farm generation facilities. Investments in a 100 MW installation are estimated at about €220 million.

Since early 2025, biomethane deliveries to Germany have already been carried out by VITAGRO, MHP, Gals Agro, and YM Liquid Gas.
