Ukraine's wheat yield totals over 27 mln t in 2021
Winter wheat crops in Ukraine have wintered well, according to the Hydrometeorological Centre. Given forecasts of an average winter wheat yield of 4.1 t/ha, wheat production in 2021 is expected to exceed 27 mln t, АgroТimes reports.
Expert advisor, PhD in Economics, Associate Professor at the Department of Public Administration and Management at Sumy National Agrarian University Oleksandr Maslak noted that this would help secure domestic demand for this type of grain.
The area under wheat in Ukraine accounts for about a quarter of the total sown area and more than 40% of all grain crops. Winter wheat accounts for up to 98% of the crop area and gross wheat yield, he marks.
The largest areas of the crop are concentrated in the central regions of Ukraine: Zaporizhzhya, Odesa, Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk.
"Last year, a total of 25.3 mln t was harvested on an area of 6.5 mln ha using the average yield of 3.9 t/ha (including 24.6 mln t of winter wheat on an area of 6.3 mln ha yielding at the same level)," Oleksandr Maslak says.
The official data reveals that the winter wheat area for the 2021 harvest is more than 6.7 mln ha, up 4.9% from last year.
As of 25 March, agriproducers in Kherson, Donetsk, Zakarpattya and Mykolayiv regions sowed 106.3 thou. ha, or 1% of the planned areas.
