Grain export 2020/21: 43 mln t of staples delivered to foreign markets

Staple grains export shipment from Ukraine has reached 43.22 mln t since the start of the 2020/21 season. As of June 16, agricultural commodities shipment dropped by 12.48 mln t or 22% from the prior year's comparative period, 55.69 mln t, the information-analytical portal of the agro-industrial complex of Ukraine reports.

Grain export structure in the reporting period:

  • corn: 22.17 mln t, 25% or 7.54 mln t y-o-y
  • wheat: 16.19 mln t, 20% or 4.13 mln t y-o-y
  • barley: 4.15 mln t, 16% or 814 t y-o-y
  • rye: 12.5 thou. t, 52% or 4.3 thou. t y-o-y

As a reminder, the Ministry for the Development of Economy, Trade and Agriculture of Ukraine and grain market participants signed the Annex to the Memorandum of Understanding on Aug. 17, 2020, setting the limit for wheat export from Ukraine in the 2020/21 season at 17.5 mln t, rye at 1 thou. t. As of the reporting date, 92.5% of the agreed volume of wheat export was shipped.

Corn export cap in Ukraine was set at 24 mln t for the 2020/21 marketing season.

In the 2019/20 season, grains, pulses and flour export from Ukraine totalled the record 57.2 mln t, 6.8 mln t higher YoY (2018/19: 50.4 mln t).

As of December 14, 2020, agriproducers in Ukraine harvested 83.8 mln t of main crops on 24.1 mln ha, of which grains and legumes total 65.4 mln t harvested on 15.3 mln ha, making up 99% of the planned areas.

In the 2021/22 season, the wheat export potential is forecasted at 19.8 mln t (+13%), barley at 4.3 mln t (+1%) and corn at 29.5 mln t (+27%).

Wheat production in Ukraine is projected by USDA at 29.5 mln t in 2021/22. Wheat exports are set at 20.5 mln t, ending stocks at 1.55 mln t. Corn production in Ukraine in 2021/22 is forecast at 37.5 mln t.
